Dell's Stage interface doesn't make up for the stale operating system. Screen quality and responsiveness are not as good as they could be.

The bottom line: The Dell Streak 7 polishes Android 2.2 to a tablet-worthy shine, and is the first to deliver 4G compatibility--but it's not enough to distract us from the incoming wave of Android 3.0 tablets.

Adobe may not be quite ready to release Photoshop for iPad, but it has looked to the iPad for extra functionality when it comes to the latest version of Photoshop in Creative Suite 5.5. Three new iOS apps for the iPad have been released – Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop – turning the Apple tablet into a remote control panel for the graphics software. Each uses Adobe’s new Touch SDK.




Adobe Color Lava handles custom color creation, using the tablet to make new swatches and themes that can then be pulled back into the main app. Adobe Eazel is basically finger-painting for grown-ups, with various software trickery to make your daubings look like real paint. Both apps work either directly linked to Photoshop or as standalone tools that can be later sync’d.

The Photoshop Touch SDK and a new scripting engine in Photoshop CS5 now opens the door for Android™, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS apps to drive and interact with Photoshop on the desktop. Adobe today also launched Creative Suite® 5.5, a significant mid-cycle release to the industry-leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow across print, video, mobile and online media.

Current Photoshop CS5 customers can experience the value of the connection to devices by downloading and installing a free patch available on www.adobe.com or via the Adobe Application Manager, beginning May 3, 2011. Samsung may have the Galaxy S II on the way to keep its flagship spot occupied, but according to the latest rumors there’ll also be a replacement to the original single-core Galaxy S as well. Connected insider Eldar Murtazin has heard that Samsung is readying the Galaxy S i9001, an overclocked version of the original device.

The Galaxy S i9001′s single-core chip will apparently be running at 1.4GHz, rather than the 1GHz it originally offered. That, Murtazin suggests, will make the i9001 Samsung’s rival to the HTC Pyramid, though we’re expecting the HTC handset to be dual-core.




Exact release dates are unknown, and of course none of this is official. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung milked the Galaxy S series’ success a little longer, just as it has done with the recent 4G version.

Samsung Russia has confirmed the Galaxy S Plus i9001, with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, TouchWiz 3.0, 8GB of internal memory, HD video recording, a 1.4GHz processor and HD video recording/playback. It will arrive in Russia at the end of April, priced at 23,990 rubles ($844).

Before Android, Motorola wasn’t doing too well and the company is turning around now that it is investing heavily into the development of Android smartphones. Sony Ericsson has suffered the same lack of interest in many of its handsets that Motorola used to suffer from.

Sony Ericsson is also getting a boost from Android with smartphones like the Xperia Play just as Motorola saw sales boosted from its Android devices. According to Financial Times while profits at SE declined with supply chain issues resulting from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami for the last quarter, the switch to Android has been positive for the company. Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg said,

“Sony Ericsson’s profitability continues as we accelerate our shift towards an Android-based smartphone portfolio, with smartphones comprising over 60 per cent of our total sales during the quarter. However, the Japan earthquake made it a challenging quarter operationally and we are experiencing some disruptions to our supply chain.”

This is one more mobile phone maker that has seen the light and come to Android to help get consumers interested in their handsets and regain a competitive edge in the market. The move to Android phones has resulted in the average selling price for an SE handset rising from €134 to €141. Once supply chain issues are resolved, SE should look even better.
