Top Free Games for Your Android Tablet

Here is my list of top free games for Android. While there are tons of good games out there, many of them were made to work on a cell phone and not for a tablet. Users of tablets, such as me and my large Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, will understand how playing some games can be tiresome due to the tablet's size. Readers of my blog will probably realize from previous posts that I truly am not a fan of games that require you to spend real money or ones that heavily require you to connect with other players in order to complete tasks. After probably hundreds of hours spent playing, I have collected a list of top games that are not only suitable for the tablet but are also able to completed without spending a single penny. The following games either require simple controls or can be played by placing the tablet on a stand with little interference to gameplay, but they will all give you an extremely satisfying experience.

I personally am not a fan of puzzle games. I like adventure and action games and even a few arcade games. As a result, I will not be including any word, Sudoku, or match-3 games in this list. Also, as the title suggests, this list only contains free games.

Wind-Up Knight
Wind-Up Knight is the first on the list. It is a high-end 3D side-scrolling platforming game. Guide your wind-up knight through over 50 levels worth of obstacles to rescue the princess in four unique worlds. Along the way, collect coins and hack enemies with your sword. Jump from platform to platform and avoid any spikes. There are tons of cool moves for you to learn, such as double jumping and wall sliding. Highly addicting and very challenging. Most likely you'll spend hours of playtime trying to collect everything in each level. Each set of levels you finish will unlock a Knightmare level to test everything you've got. If you stick with the game long enough, you'll even be able to unlock everything without paying a single coin out of your pocket. Of course, you can also pay to get more coins to unlock elite equipment to make for a much better gaming experience, but this is not required at all! A definite must have game for any Android device.

Cut the Rope
The highly popular iOS game is now available for Android. Slide your finger across the screen to cut ropes, collect stars, and feed the absolutely adorable Om Nom with his favorite candy. The more stars you collect the more levels you'll be able to unlock. Utilize your knowledge of physics to score high. There are tons of challenging levels for you to play and figure out. You'll quickly find yourself to be addicted to feeding Om Nom and making sure that he has a smile on his face. Meanwhile, the sequel Cut the Rope: Experiments contains even more challenges and new items for you to experiment with such as rockets, magical top hats, and even an anti-gravity button! So grab Cut the Rope today!

Muffin Knight

After having all her muffins stolen by monsters, an old fairy orders a young boy to help her get back all her muffins. However, the boy seems to have been cursed as, every time he touches a muffin, he turns into a different creature. The old fairy promises to free the boy from the spell after he has collected all of the muffins. Muffin Knight is an action-packed platformer with an assortment of fairytale creatures, from unicorns to archers. There are even ninja kitties! Each fairytale creature has its own attack and you will be able to upgrade their skills as the game progresses to use them to defeat monsters along the way. There are different levels for you to play each with a different surrounding, ranging from forests to castles. The game features gorgeous graphics and hours of gameplay. You're even able to customize the size of the buttons and their locations.

Lair Defense: Dungeon and Lair Defense: Shrine

While there are tons of free tower defense games out there for the Android device, Lair Defense: Dungeon and its sequel Lair Defense: Shrine are two excellent games that stand out from the crowd. As a race of dragons, you must protect your homeland and your precious dragon eggs from greedy humans. There are there types of dragons for you to choose from: Fire, Ice, and Poison. Each dragon has its own special power  and you'll be able to upgrade them to make them even more powerful and unlock special skills. You can also use magic skills such as Fire Rain to help stop thee varying hordes of enemies. Enemies can range from the measly peasant to the strong warrior and each type of enemy has its own power and immunities. This game heavily relies on strategic placement and actions to successfully defend against the enemies and prevent your eggs from being stolen. Playing alone will get you all that you need, though some patience might be needed, so you never need to spend a dime to get more stuff. Although the game starts out a bit slow, the difficulty quickly escalates. So, Lair Defense is an excellent game both fun and challenging.

Defender II
Defender II is the sequel to the hit tower defense game Defender developed by DroidHen. Even more features were added in the game, making the sequel the better game out of the two. Touch the screen to unleash a volley of arrows at hordes of advancing monsters that are trying to destroy your castle. New mage towers will be able to help you in attacking while lava moats will burn any monsters that try to cross. Activate various spells to either destroy or slow down your enemies. Use the points that you earn to upgrade your weapons, spells, and defense. Defeat bosses to earn even greater rewards. A battle option was also added so that you can play against other players to see who can last the longest. Defender II is a fun game with nice graphics that will quickly increase in difficulty, and this is where the game might force you to shell out real money to buy better equipment just to help you make it out alive. Still, the game is fun while it lasts.

Dragon, Fly!

Dragon, Fly! is Android's answer to the highly popular Tiny Wings for the iOS. You must help guide a little dragon that wants to get away from his overprotective mother and explore the lands beyond. Slide and fly over gorgeous mountain scenery. The game has very simple controls. Simply touch and hold to play. Hold down to gain momentum and release to fly into the air. Getting three perfect slides will ignite Fire Mode and you'll fly through the air trailing fire behind and racking up significant points. Along the way collect gems to increase your score and speed potions to, well, increase your speed. See how far you can go and help the cute little dragon along. A simple, relaxing, and adorable arcade game that will help you spend the rest of your boring afternoons.

Rage of Bahamut
Rage of Bahamut is a trading card game that has become ridiculously popular over the past couple of weeks. When you first start, you'll be able to choose between there factions: Man, Gods, and Demons. You'll get weak cards but you'll be able to evolve them into more powerful cards. Go on quests to collect even more cards and complete treasure sets to earn yourself rare cards. Strategically organize your deck to defeat other real players in battle and earn spoils from war. Befriend other players to increase your strength and trade with others to get the cards that you want. Use potions and other magical items to help you replenish your energy to venture in even more quests. Join or create your own order and go on wars and make your name go down in Rage of Bahamut history. Every now and then the game will host an event where you'll be able to earn super rare and powerful cards for your deck. Each card has stunningly beautiful anime-style graphics and different abilities. This game is EXTREMELY addicting. Ever since I first started playing, I can't put this game down at all. It's not the #1 top grossing game in Google Play for seven weeks for nothing!

Note: You will need a Mobage account in order to play this game. Signing up is free and you'll be able to use the same account to access most other Mobage games.

Second Note: Because this game wasn't optimized for a large screen, I had trouble accessing some of the pages in this game on my tablet because the buttons were blocked by the header bar. However, after updating my OS to Honeycomb 3.2, I was able to fix this problem by using the Zoom Compatibility button. Make sure you select the "Zoom" option and not the "Stretch" one to fix this problem. Now you'll be able to access all of the buttons with no problems at all, though everything will look uncannily large...

Dark Summoner
Dark Summoner is another free trading card game. The gameplay is very similar to Rage of Bahamut, give or take some features. The world of Dark Summoner is much darker and the graphics of the cards are all very nightmarish and twisted. Despite this, the game is still highly addicting to play as you level up your monsters and battle with other real players. Complete quests to gain more monster cards and complete treasure sets to summon bosses to defeat. Use Crystals to summon even more monsters and use potions to replenish your energy. This game offers stunning animation visuals though the game can be slow to load at times. Also, this game relies more heavily on in-app purchases than Rage of Bahamut to collect high rank monsters. If you're  a fan of Rage of Bahamut or trading card games in general, make sure you download a copy of Dark Summoner and check it out!

Inotia IV: The Assassin of Berkel
The fourth installment in The Chronicles of Inotia, which is an RPG. Choose from six different classes, each with a unique set of skills, for your character. Journey through various different landscapes as you travel and add people to your party to increase your strength. Learn skills and magic as you level up. Interact with other characters and defeat enemies that obstruct your path. Featuring hours of gameplay and stunning graphics, Inotia IV is a must have for any RPG fan out there.

Ice Age Village
Ice Age Village is the Ice Age version of many "~Village" games out there. Scrat's hunt for nuts has opened a crack in the earth and has caused various natural disasters to hit the land of Ice Age. All the animals are scurrying to safety and have come to seek the help of Manny, Ellie, Sid, and Diego, who have decided to build a village to house the animals. Spend coins to buy new animals and help lonely animals find a mate. Hatch eggs to complete families and they will reward you with coins. Build playgrounds to entertain all the little ones and spruce up the barren landscape with some flowers and statues. As you collect money from the animals and feed them, you'll be able to complete side quests. Complete animal collections to earn special items. If you're ever bored and waiting for collection time to happen, you can spend time playing Scrat's Kung Fu game as he whacks piranhas as revenge for them stealing his acorns. The game features beautiful graphics and cute animals. I especially love the birds in the game.

Fruit Ninja
There's really not much to say for this game as the objective of the game is simple: Slide your finger across the screen to slice fruit as they are thrown in the air before they fall back down. Slice a bunch at once to score combos. Meanwhile, make sure you avoid those bombs as hitting one would automatically end the game. There's no timer so the only enemy here is yourself and your butterfingers. Highly addictive and good graphics. Slice your way to victory like a ninja as you unleash fruit carnage across the screen. See how high you can score!

Alchemy
In this fun little game, you must mix various elements to create new ones. You first start out with four basic elements: Air, Water, Fire, and Earth and have to figure out new combinations to expand them into hundreds of different new elements. For example, combining Air and Water will create Steam while Fire and Earth will turn into Stone. You'll have to be really creative in order to find more than 300 elements (and more are coming along the way), ranging from natural materials to animals to even supernatural creatures.

Mouse
Mouse is a game that is very similar to the popular iOS game Unblock Me. However, I have found that Unblock Me is horrible on tablets because the screen remains phone size. I don't know if they have fixed this problem yet but Mouse is a great alternative that works great on tablets. Slide blocks around so that you may help the little mouse find its way out of the laboratory and to freedom. The idea is simple enough but the game can easily become challenging as you strive to figure out the combination of moves that will win the level.

Bag It!
Who knew that putting items in a grocery bag could be so hard? In the puzzle game Bag It! your goal is to place various items into a grocery bag so that they all fit nicely and none get broken along the way. Keep all the heavy items at the bottom and the light ones on top. You'll also be able to rotate items to help fit them in the bag, but many levels will offer an added challenge of keeping all of the items in their upright position. Place certain items next to each other to unlock combinations. Earn medals to unlock even more levels. The game offers hours of addicting and challenging gameplay. I believe that Google Play offers a free Lite version of this game, though I was able to get the full version free from Amazon because of its Free App of the Day feature.

Castle of Shadows
Castle Of Shadows

If you like Castlevania, you'll love Castle of Shadows! After war, the devils have built a castle in an attempt to take over mankind. Thus a hero is born to go into the castle and save mankind. Side-scrolling action game at its finest. Slaughter your enemies with various weapons and magic spells. The game features excellent graphics coupled with smooth gameplay. It's filled with crazy button mashing and challenging goodness.

Cloudy
Cloudy
In the puzzle game Cloudy, your mission is to find a pathway for your paper plane to fly. Collect all the stars in the sky and avoid any clouds along the way. Challenge yourself and your friends to discover the best route as your rack your brains in this challenging and creative puzzle game. Highly addicting and filled with mind-sapping good.

Slice It!
In this creative and addictive game, your goal is to slice various shapes into equal parts. Who knew that it would so hard to slice a square exactly in half? This is a simple game that really gets you thinking in creative ways to fragment something, and you'll soon find your afternoons and weekends filled with slicing goodness.

Winter Walk

The objective in this game is simple: try to keep your hat on your head! You play as a gentleman walking in a blizzard. You must help him hold onto his hat so that the wind does not blow it away. Along the way you'll be able to read the gentleman's thoughts. Although this game is fairly simple, playing this game proved to be a rather pleasant experience. It's both easy and relaxing enough and the gentleman's thoughts are fairly amusing.

Angry Birds: Space

Well, who doesn't like to fling little angry birds at green pigs? The bird crew is back and now they're in space! Brand new birds with new abilities have been added, and you'll even be able to face off in boss fights. Angry Birds: Space has really redefined the whole Angry Birds appeal.

The following games also deserve recognition. The only reason I did not include them on the list above is that they are more suitable for playing on a device with a smaller screen such as your phone. Playing them on a tablet can be rather hefty though they are possible.

Temple Run
Temple Run
In Temple Run, your goal is to help guide the adventurer escape from an ancient temple and its Evil Demon Monkey guardians from hunting you down after you have stolen their cursed idol. Race down temple walls and sheer cliffs and collect coins along the way. The more coins you collect the more powerups you'll be able to unlock. Jump over gaps and tree trunks and slide under fire jets. Hit one obstacle and its game over. Slide your finger across the screen to perform actions and tilt your device to move from left to right. Test your reflexes in this award winning game. While this game is manageable on a large tablet such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, it can be quite tiring afterwards as you try to tilt the device with one hand while using the other to tell the character what to do. Trying to hold the device in both hands while using your thumbs to slide can be rather unresponsive. So while the game is extremely fun and addicting, its gameplay design are not the best for playing on a tablet.
