Mysterious medieval action-adventure on the way from Gameloft.Altair’s Chronicles is a 2D platformer at heart, reminiscent of the earliest Prince of Persia games. you control Altair with a virtual directional stick, and touch onscreen buttons to jump and attack. You must work your way through linear levels, opting to sneak past unsuspecting guards using the rooftops to your advantage, or plough into conflict head on with your trusty sword and hidden blade.

Gamestyle will happily admit to not having high hopes for Altair’s Chronicles before they started playing. Having had some poor experiences with virtual control sticks, it’s going to take something special to replace the trusty d-pad. When we started playing, however, we were pleasantly surprised. Movement actually worked well, and soon we were running and jumping our way through the levels. Combat is also particularly well-implemented, and blocking and counter-attacking was fluid and enjoyable. We were starting to feel guilty about our preconceptions.

But then we played some more. It’s not until the levels get more complex, that the failings of the virtual control stick become apparent. Although you can choose between a 360 degree or an 8-way movement system, neither are suitably precise, and Gamestyle were missing jumps and falling to their death as a result. Thankfully the checkpoints are plenty, and you never have to replay much of the level, but it’s still enough to ruin the experience.
