Infinity (Chronicles of Nick, Book One) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Infinity is the first book in the Chronicles of Nick series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The novel, as obvious from the series title, follows the life of Nick Gautier, a 14-year-old teenager who lives a shabby life with his stripper mom. His father is in prison for multiple murders. Nick hates his high school life. Everyone hates him at school (including the principal) and he sees no hope of him ever landing a girl. When Nick is suspended from school one day, his suspension ends up being the catalyst to a whole series of events that ends up landing him a high-paying job with an eccentric billionaire and facing a near Zombie Apocalypse. Nick teams up with a few classmates at school, who he finds are actually demons in disguise, in order to stop the zombies from not only killing him but also his mom. Supposedly Nick is also the Malachai, a being of pure evil. His father, being the previous Malachai, and also Nick's girlfriend Nekoda is out to stop him.

The book's blurb promises a lot of things, but you will soon realize that none of the events mentioned in the blurb are even in the book. All except Nick facing zombies. The name Dark-Hunters are only mentioned and never explained. It shouldn't be assumed that the reader knows the information because they read a previous series (which I didn't). Nick never has to deal with hiding his chainsaw from his principal because it was only a crazy notion that he had. The whole zombie-hunting ordeal was over very quickly anyhow for this to be a problem. Nick doesn't discover who he is either, and we never see Archeron betraying Nick. Nick also doesn't realize his crush's true identity. Simi also isn't trying to eat Nick as she feels attracted to him. Also, the phrase on the back cover of the book (that Nick fears no one for he is the "baddest beast in the land") is only a simple sentence used by Nick to boost his willpower. In the end, the entire blurb and prologue is more of a summary of what will come AFTER the book. It is quite obvious that you'll have to read the previous related series in order to fully understand how everything is supposed to fit with one another.

Also I am quite annoyed by the swarms of new characters being introduced. Names are constantly being referenced but not formally introduced until several chapters later. All Nick's classmates, who weren't friendly with him before, suddenly all become his best friend with no explanation whatsoever. I'm also not quite pleased by the fact that almost everyone, except Nick's mother and her friends, are a supernatural beings.

If you were looking for some action in this book, shy away now because there's hardly any action in the book other than Nick constantly running away from the zombies. Those that actually do the fighting are other characters and their fight scenes are only elaborated in one or two sentences.

With the cons being said, let's move to the pros of this book. One thing I did like about this book though was that the writing style matched the immaturity of a young teenager, ultimately Nick, from the humor and snappy comebacks. I did have a few laughs along the way, but Nick thinking that everyone is a pervert can be rather annoying as it wastes precious moments of the plot, instead replacing what could be action with Nick questioning the other.
