Bug-Catching Contest The Bug-Catching Contest is held in the National Park every week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. You can only choose one Pokemon to go in with you, so it's a good idea to choose a low-level Pokemon that can withstand a few hits but won't faint your foe. I personally made the mistake of bringing in my Level 22 Noctowl and every Bug Pokemon I tried to weaken always fainted. You will be given 20 Competition Balls and the contest will end when you either run out of Poke Balls or the twenty-minute time limit has been reached. Various Pokemon will give you different scores. A Kakuna or Metapod will give you a poor score, whereas a Scyther, Pinsir, or Paras will give you an excellent score. However, these three Pokemon also happen to be the hardest to find in the Park. A Butterfree and Beedril will give you an average score. Also, the amount of HP left when captured will also influence your score. For example, capturing the same Pokemon with a full HP bar will give you a better score than with a HP bar in the red zone. Winning first place will grant you a SUN STONE before the National Pokedex. The first prize for Post-National Dex contestants will range from various evolution stones, including the long-sought after Dawn and Dusk Stones. Second prize will grant you an EVERSTONE while the third prize will grant you a Gold Berry (SITRUS BERRY for Post-National Dex). If you were unable to place, you will receive a SHED SHELL as a consolation prize.
Pokeathlon The Pokeathlon is a new feature of the HeartGold/SoulSilver games. Pokemon can participate in various courses. The courses available are Speed, Stamina, Jump, Skill, and Power. You can only participate in one course at a time, though many times these courses will also require the use of other stats. Each team consists of three Pokemon, and each course consists of three events. These events are mini games that will require the use of your touch-screen.You can use Apricorn Juice in order to raise your Pokemon's stats. Different colored Apricorns will raise different stats. You can make your own Apricorn Juice if you have the APRICORN BLENDER (received from the Apricorn Vender near the Pokeathlon Dome). You can also buy Apricorn Juice from the Apricorn Vender Stand.
Your points will accumulate, which you can later redeem for prizes at the Prize Counter. Different prizes will be available on different days. You can get Apricorns, Vitamins, Medicine, Rare Items, or Evolution Stones. This can be an alternative method to finding rare evolution stones, as opposed to the Bug-Catching Method.
Lottery Located on the sixth floor (top) of the Goldenrod Department Store is the Daily Drawing Corner. For $300, you can draw tickets to see if you were able to place. First place will grant you a TM. Second place will give you a Pokeball, and the third place will reward you with a random berry. This can be done as many times as you want (as long as you have the money). To see the prizes of the day, check with the first clerk at the counter.
Radio Tower Lottery Every day, you can go to the Goldenrod Radio Tower to draw a lottery ticket. Talk to the middle clerk in order to draw a ticket. If the ticket number matches with any of your Pokemon's ID number, then you will receive a prize. If the last digit matches, then you will receive an Ultra Ball. First place (matching all 5 digits) will give you a Master Ball.
Buena's Password Every day, if you tune your radio to Buena's channel, you will be able to get Buena's Password. You can then go to the second floor of the Goldenrod Radio Tower and tell Buena the password. If you get it right, you will receive one point on your Blue Card, which will give you gifts at a certain number of points. For example, for one point, you will receive a Poke Ball, and for three points you will receive a Full Revive.
Swarms If you have the Radio Card (given by correctly answering five questions from the last clerk in the Goldenrod Radio Tower), then you can listen to Professor Oaks' Pokemon Talk Show. He will tell you where there are swarms and what types of Pokemon are available. The type of Pokemon differs every day so it's a good idea to check every day. Many times, these Swarm Pokemon are rare Pokemon.
Lapras Every Friday, you will be able to find a Lapras in the basement of Union Cave. You will need Surf to reach it, which will require you first defeating Morty in Ecruteak City.
Clefairy Dance Every Monday night, if you go to the top of Mt. Moon, you will be able to find several Clefairy dancing. Upon approach, they will run away but one Clefairy will leave behind a Moon Stone.
